WEALD & DOWNLAND GRIDSHELL

Doug King was environmental engineer for the design and construction of this unique gridshell building providing workshop, gallery and archive store for the Weald & Downland Museum. The design addresses the sustainable use of building materials, in particular timber, with the frame containing just 10% of the material of an equivalent, conventional timber frame. Earth sheltering and passive cooling maintains conditions in the the archive storage in the lower floor with minimal energy consumption. The project was shortlisted for the Stirling Prize in 2002.
