SAINSBURY ENVIRONMENTAL SUPERSTORE
Doug King was environmental designer for the Sainsbury's flagship superstore, built at Greenwich for the Millenium.
This store features one of the most radical designs in the history of retailing; completely overturning the conventional servicing strategies. Extensive daylighting, natural ventilation, groundwater cooling of the food refrigeration with heat recovery into the store all contribute to a 50% reduction in typical energy consumption. The store achieved the only ever maximum score under "BREEAM for Retail" and was the people's choice for the Stirling Prize shortlist in 2001
