GENZYME CENTRE
Doug King helped bring a European approach to Cambridge, Massachusetts with this landmark building which breaks the mould of air-conditioned American buildings. With internal hanging gardens and an intelligent facade, the new Genzyme Centre delivers energy consumption substantially below the norm for the USA. Opening windows and a full height atrium for ventilation is a first for Massachusetts. Heliostats on the roof beam sunlight into the offices via a chandelier of mirrors in the atrium. This was the first large commercial building in the USA to achieve a coveted LEED Platinum rating.
