Doug King graduated as a physicist and entered the construction industry out of curiosity, seeing buildings as large interdependent systems that were a challenge to understand. A Chartered Physicist and Chartered Environmentalist as well as a Chartered Engineer, he brings a scientific approach and environmental sensitivity to the engineering of buildings. A pioneer in the field of sustainable design, Doug has been involved in a wide variety of ground-breaking buildings including the Weald & Downland Gridshell, the Genzyme Centre, the new Rolls Royce Factory and the RSC Courtyard Theatre. The Building Services Journal recently listed two of Doug's environmental designs, the Millennium Sainsbury's and the Innovate Green Office, amongst the 30 most influential buildings of the last 30 years. Doug founded King Shaw Associates in 2002 to focus on integrated engineering design for sustainable buildings. Doug also provides consultancy on sustainable practice within construction and construction businesses, mainly focussing on projects with a foundation in knowledge or technology transfer. Doug is a Fellow of The Institute of Physics, CIBSE and the Energy Institute. He was Young Consulting Engineer of the Year in 2002 and has been awarded both the Edmund Hambley Medal and the James Watt Medal by the Institution of Civil Engineers. |
